Humility is when we in total surrender, yield ourselves to the spirit of God, so that He completely overshadows us. In that context, we decrease so that Christ is exalted in us. Humility is saying to God that you surrender your self-sufficiency, all the things that gives you self-value and worth. It is letting your worth and self-value be found in Christ, knowing that you are complete in Him. The bible says in Jeremiah 9:24 “but let him who glories, glory in this; that he understands and knows me.” Humility is a cloak we must have on as we walk in God’s presence every day, as none can stand before His presence without it. With this cloak on, our eyes are opened to see the glory of God, our ears to hear His voice and our hearts given the understanding to know Him.

As children of God, we are to be like our father in every way; and Humility is one of the many distinct characteristics of God. Just as Christ in all humility, endured all the pain, betrayal, disgrace, blasphemies and many more on that cross, that we by grace, through faith in Christ, should be saved from the bondage of sin and death (Isaiah 53:7)

There are two ways to attain humility.

• By resting on the word of God, so that our stony hearts are broken and we are transformed into His likeness.
• We are broken through trials and temptations, and do come to the recognition that we aren’t self-sufficient on our own, but we need God.

Matthew 21:44 says “and whoever falls on this stone will be broken, but on whomever it falls, it will grind him to powder.”

The world would be a better place if we all learn to be humble and see things through the eyes of humility. There are certain things we wouldn’t do and certain ways we wouldn’t feel if we were humble, because in LOVE, humility is found and Love covers a multitude of sins “1 Peter 4:8.” Our Lord Jesus Christ loved His disciples so much, it was demonstrated in His humility when He washed their feet. Humility is a strength not a weakness. Jesus said in 23:11 “but he who is greatest amongst you shall be your servant. It takes humility to serve, and to lead one must be prepared to serve. This entails of your service to God and mankind. You might want to ask yourself questions like; do you always want to be right in everything? Are you willing to learn more, or do you feel like you know all? Do you think more of yourself and less of God and others? Do you feel like you are your own man/woman, self-made and you can do it all by yourself? Do you see yourself as superior to others? Do you feel like you are always ahead of God in situations? Be honest to yourself and ask the Holy Spirit for Help in areas of your shortcomings.

The opposite of Humility is PRIDE. Pride caused the first fall from grace to ashes. It is when people in their own self sufficiency exalt themselves above the Most-High like the Devil did before he was cast down, as it is to this day.  Mathew 23:12 says “And whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.” Pride is the root cause of all forms of sin and is among the seven deadly sins God hates (proverbs 6:17-18). Proverbs 16:5 says “Everyone proud in heart is an abomination to the lord”

Let us shun every work of pride today, even as we, being filled with the Holy Spirit receive grace to walk in all humility before the Lord, all the days of our life. Amen.
