Your identity is who you are. It is the totality of what makes your being distinct and unique. As Christians, our identity is affixed in whom God is, as we are for-bearers of His seed. That is why the Bible in (Psalm 82:6) refers to us as gods, because not only are the characteristics of our God expressed in and through us, we are inseparable from Him. For example, everything that a plant is and should be is found in a seed. And what does a seed do? it germinates into a plant that in turn, produces fruits giving more seeds – abundant life in Christ. From the seed comes all the plant needs to survive; root to stand firm and get nutrients, branches, leaves, stem etc. so, the guava tree knows it’s a guava tree, because it is the living testimony of a guava seed and not a mango’s. In the same way, does the spirit of the Lord who dwells inside of you not only testifies of you as an heir to the kingdom, He also is the seed coat needed to shield you from all intended damage, making sure you remain in a state of dormancy (waiting on Christ), until conditions are favourable enough for you to germinate, in order to become all that you were created to be in Christ Jesus. it is written in (Phil 14:19) “But my God shall supply all your needs (including spiritual nutrients you need to grow) according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus,” and in Phil 4: 13 “I can do all things through Christ which strenghteneth me.”
There have been situations in my life when I felt like I didn’t just fit in amongst a group of people, in a social gathering, at the neighbourhood, at a given place, at school or sometimes at work. you know that scenario when you are the one people will always remember, because there’s just something intriguing about you? Or you are the one no one remembers, because you are just too significantly or insignificantly odd off the pattern? when I first moved to Denmark, it was challenging, having moved from a place completely different (Africa) to a place I now call home. My identity was caught in between whom I was and what I knew in Africa to whom I was becoming and the new things I was learning in Denmark. Lost in the vagueness of the disparity between the new and the old which was still a part of me, I needed to affine my identity to what God says about me, not to my present or past self, but saw the seasons of change as being part of a greater part in Gods plan for my life. I came to an understanding of whom I was in Christ and the sacrifice He paid on the cross for my sake.
Knowing God and identifying who you are in Him is the first step towards fulfilling your divine destiny. Why? Because it places you on a higher ground, so that by the leading of His Holy Spirit, you can discern actions that are in alignment to Gods will and plan for your life or not. And by having faith, through obedience and patience, the power of God needed to activate your gifting and calling is released into your life, elevating you to a higher level of grace needed to walk in your calling and to fulfil your destiny. Also, when you know your identity in Christ, you won’t lose your self-esteem when people think of you differently than you ought to have been perceived. You wouldn’t try to prove yourself to anyone just to get acknowledged, you wouldn’t walk around trying to be the top dog, you wouldn’t look down on yourself when people look down on you because you know that you are wonderfully and fearfully created by God (psalm 139:14). And when oppositions knock on your door, you’ll stand strong because you know that Greater is He that is in You than any sickness, joblessness, depression, barrenness, confusion, helplessness, marital problems, failures, addictions, fear, pain, abuse, faithlessness, poverty, rejection, weariness; you name it.
When you begin to see yourself the way God sees you, your mind becomes renewed by the truth and you are able to function in the state of whom God says you are; the psalmist says in (Psalm 139:14) “Marvellous are the works of Thy hands (that’s you) and that my soul knoweth quite well!” Bear in mind that you will progress through different versions of you as God takes you from glory to glory in the different seasons of your life. This means that who you are today, may not be who you are tomorrow. But you get better and better each season, even as you become more experienced in the things of the Lord. And with each new season, comes a renewing of mind so that there is a balance between the functionality your state of mind and the current you. But even as you progress in destiny, one thing remains constant: The essence of your being, which is intertwined with and found in the Holy Spirit, giving you the divine DNA of God! It is written in 1st Corinthians 6:17 “But he who is joined to the Lord becomes one spirit with Him.”
HOW TO RECLAIM YOUR IDENTITY IN CHRIST
- Spend time with God by reading His word (your bible).
- Familiarize yourself with what God says about you.
- Speak the word to your hearing, believe it as you say it.
- Pray to the Lord, honestly ask for help in the areas of your weaknesses (2 Corinth 12:9).
- Ask for more of the Holy Spirit. He gives you the power to become a child of God (John 1:2).
LET US PRAY
Dear Father, thank You for being who You are in us. Help us to be who we are in You. Give us the grace to walk in our calling as Children of The Most High, even as we begin to align our lives to what you’ve made us to be, may You be the solid rock on which we stand. Open the understanding of our hearts that our eyes may see that You delight in us and that Your Love for us endures forevermore. Amen!
